MUKONO: It was a sombre mood at Kyabakadde Parish Church in Mukono District on Tuesday as mourners from mainly Lugazi Diocese gathered to receive the body of the late Archbishop of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

Kyabakadde located in Kyampisi Sub County is the home village where Archbishop Lwanga was born on January 19, 1953, to the late Joseph Wamala and Matilda Wamala. He attended Kyabakadde Catholic Primary School from 1959 to 1963 before joining Nyenga Minor Seminary for his O-Level from 1964 to 1971.

Christians and the clergy could not hold their tears as Lwanga’s casket was carried inside the Church by pallbearers from the Uganda Police.

Christians who gathered at the Church eulogized Dr Lwanga for spearheading spiritual and economic growth in the area.

To the community of Kyabakadde, Lwanga is an irreplaceable symbol that brought their community to the limelight.

Bishop Christopher Kakooza of Lugazi Diocese praised Dr Lwanga for establishing many development projects in Kampala, Luwero and Lugazi diocese specifically Kyabakadde his home village.

Residents and family members also lauded Lwanga for not only developing their spiritual lives but also changing their economic and social lives. He is lauded for constructing the first secondary school in the area, St Cyprian High School, extending electricity and water to the community and spearheading the construction of Kyabakadde Parish Church.

Olive Nankya, a niece to Dr Lwanga says that the deceased inspired three family members to become priests and these include: Joseph Wamala, Lawrence Ndiwalana and Victor Musoke.

“He has been a man who devoted his life to supporting all the members of the family and the community at large,” Nankya said.

Sister Bernadette Nalubuga who is part of Daughters of Mary from Bwanda Masaka says Dr Lwanga not only natured her dream of joining the ministry but also paid her school fees until she completed her studies.
