Kampala. Amid the growing transport chaos from the City to Upcountry destinations, with fares tripled in some areas, the Uganda Police Force has announced it will transport all students from the city to towns next to their villages.

“The Inspector General of Police has organized free transport for students who are stranded in the various taxi and bus parks. The police busses are parked at city square and Admission is strictly for students in school uniform and with their respective school ID,” a tweet from the police spokesperson said Tuesday night.

The assembly point is at the Constitutional Square and the specific routes will be followed based on numbers.

Meanwhile bus owners have been arrested for hiking transport fares but it is not yet established the nature of charges they will face.

Multitudes of people are leaving the city as the deadline for transporting people back to villages nears. President Museveni in his covid19 status address on Sunday banned inter district movements among other restrictions.

Government decides fares

In a meeting Chaired by Col Edith Nakalema in with the ministry of Works and Transport officials and Kampala Police Metropolitan officers, government has decided what it deemed as fair charges for travelers.

Kampala to Gulu not more than Shs.70,000; Kampala to Mbarara not more than Ugx 60,000.

Kampala to Arua Ugx 100,000; Kampala to Mbale not more than Ugx 60,000; KAmpala to Kisoro not more than Ugx 100,000; Kampala to Lira Shs. 70,000; Kampala to Rukungiri not more than Ugx 70,000.

A source that attended the meeting isaid that officials were now preparing to communicate the decision in the bus parks of Namayiba, Kisenyi, Arua
