Sisimuka Uganda CEO Frank Gashumba and the family of the late Desire Mirembe have called upon police to ensure the suspect in the killing is arrested wherever he is seen.

Dr Kirabo Matthew is suspected to have brutally murdered Mirembe in 2015 while both were medical students in Makerere University.

“Impunity must stop. Kirabo must face the law,” Gashumba said.

Kirabo was arrested in 2015, charged with murder and bailed on his own admission to have murdered Mirembe.

Assessors say Mathew Kirabo guilty of killing Makerere University student, Desire Mirembe.

March 28, 2022

The case has never been resolved since then. With the intervention of Col Edith Nakalema the anti-corruption unit head and the Principal Judge, the case was resumed late last month. However as you are aware the suspect has gone missing and skipped the second hearing session.

Gashumba’s full statement

We would like to inform Ugandans and the world at large, about the cruel atrocity and crime that befell our family when our daughter (Desire Mirembe) was murdered in cold blood back in 2015 by Mathew Kirabo, That cruel, heartless and senseless taking of our daughter’s innocent life, cut short her life at a tender age of 19years, and forever buried her dream of becoming a medical doctor and any other aspirations she could have had as a normal human being.

  • Emmanuel Muwonge and women activists at a press conference in Kampala on November 9.

We assert and inform the public that, it is true that Mathew Kirabo murdered our daughter in cold blood. To us, Mathew Kirabo is not a suspect, but the real murderer. Though the honorable court is yet to pronounce itself, from the evidence so far adduced in court, the exhibits tendered in, the testimony of detectives and medical experts (including pathologist) video tape evidence where Mathew Kirabo describes the details of how on the fateful day, he picked

Desire Mirembe and the two went to Oasis mall where, following a disagreement, he administered sleeping pills to her drink and drove her to Lugazi sugarcane plantation where he slit her throat. Added to the fact that, Mathew Kirabo was the last person seen in the company of late Desire Mirembe and his placed on the scene, not only by eye witness testimony but by surveillance cameras as well as real time telephone mast communication, there is absolutely no doubt, and that Mathew Kirabo is the murderer. Furthermore, the very fact, that Mathew Kirabo was able to lead police to the exact direction and the exact spot where police detectives found the body, just how would he have known all that, if he wasn’t the killer?

We commend the trial judge (Honourable Justice Henry Kaweesa) who has tried to expedite the hearing of this case which had stalled since 2015 when the then Principal Judge Yorokamu Bamwine had failed us despite our repeated pleas to see justice in this case. We condemn the fact that, we had to wait 6 years for justice, and in the meantime, the murderer finished medical school, and even got married and is planning to travel abroad as if our daughter’s life doesn’t matter, as if we are not entitled to fairness and justice!

We are aware that some powerful figures in the Judiciary tried to frustrate our getting justice in this case, but we thank people of goodwill such as the current Honourable Principal Judge (Justice Flavian Nzeija) who have intervened to ensure that finally justice is seen to be done, and as a family, we hope for closure once the murder case is justly and judiciously concluded.

On the 3rd of November High court Judge issued a warrant of arrest for Mathew Kirabo,  Anybody  having any  information leading to his arrest should contact  the nearest Police station or call 0718 357 460.
