Businessman accused of publishing deputy speaker’s corruption dossier released on bail

KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: Prominent city businessman and property advisor Francis Matovu aka Bbuto has been released from Kitalya prison with three others including two journalists and Moses Bigirwa a National Unity Platform mobiliser.

 

They had been charged with offensive communication after corruption allegations against deputy speaker Anita Among.

The accused appear before court via video link from Kitalya November 18 2021

Mr Bbuto was arrested on November 9 and arraigned in court on November 12 along Moses Mugarura a journalist. A day earlier, Moses Bigirwa and Pidson Kareire while appearing before Magistrate Gladys Kamasanyu were charged with 3 counts of offensive communication, Libel and demanding money with menace.

But on Friday, they were granted a cash bail of Shs.1.000.000 while each of their sureties were slapped with a Shs.50m non cash bond.

 

Prosecution alleges that in the month of November 2021 in Kampala district, Moses Bigirwa, Pidson Kareire and others still at large willfully and repeatedly used electronic communication on Whatsapp to post content offensive in nature against the Deputy Speaker. It also alleged that in the same month Bigirwa tried to solicit a big sum of money from the deputy speaker.

 

The accused deny the charges.
