ENTEBE-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: The now celebrity Nsenene vendor aboard a Uganda airliner , Paul Mubiru has been charged with the case of being a common nuisance, according to police spokesperson Fred Enanga.
“We arrested him and he is being charged with the case of being a common nuisance,” Enganga said during a weekly press briefing at Naguru on Monday.
The case of common nuisance, according to Uganda Penal code is ‘any person who does an act not authorized by law or omits to discharge a legal duty and thereby causes any common injury, or danger or annoyance, or obstructs or causes inconvenience to the public in the exercise of common rights, commits the misdemeanor termed a common nuisance and is liable to imprisonment for one year.
Enanga also said Mubiru and his colleague who filmed him face another charge of negligent act because they boarded a place without a mask. That offense is negligence.
Although Paul Mubiru apologized, he was arrested as soon as he arrived back in Uganda at Entebe Airport on Sunday.
Mubiru was detained at the Aviation police station in Entebbe, after being handled for a few hours in the security office of the airport. Mubiru’s woes started after he was seen in a video selling grasshoppers as other passengers boarded the flight at Entebbe.
The incident, which has since gone viral on social media, happened before the airline’s Airbus 330-800Neo departed for Dubai at Entebbe airport on Friday, November 26.
Mubiru is a purchasing agent for city traders, in videos circulating on social media, was seen selling grasshoppers for Shs 10,000 in a transparent polyethylene bag (kaveera). Mubiru has since apologized for his actions, saying he was hawking the grasshoppers for comical purposes.
Thaddeus Musoke, the chairperson of Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) which Mubiru belongs to on Saturday vowed to punish him for his actions.
“How could a frequent traveler like him do such a thing? He cannot go unpunished because he even refused to listen to fellow traders and airline crew who told him not to sell nsenene,” said Musoke.
