Govt names six countries from the where 9 cases of Omnicron registered originated

At the news of the new infections, Ugandans took to social media some doubtful about the new infections while others were concerned the economy that is due to reopen next month would reopen.

KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: As the new deadly Omnicron covid19 is registered in the country, government has named six countries from which it was imported into the country through Entebe Airport.

A report authored by the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) on December 6 says that travellers who were innfe Ted with the virus arrived from Nigeria, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo and Netherlands.

They areived aboard four airlines including Ethiopian Airways, Uganda Airlines, Kenya Airlines and Airlink.

Omicron was first detected in South Africa and subsequently reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) on the November 24, 2021.

The variant is said to have several mutations and is currently registered in 40 global nations including the United States of America, Europe, Israel and China among other countries.

Uganda announced Tuesday it has discovered  9 cases.

But World Health Organization (WHO) advised nations should not panic about the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 although rigorous preparation was needful.

The BBC news quoted a top WHO scientist Soumya Swaminathan as telling the world last Friday the situation now was very different to a year ago.

How Uganda concluded it’s omnicron

The  UVRI said in a report that from 13 samples collected November 29 from travellers at Entebbe International Airport, eleven were sequenced and seven were positive with Omicron variant.
