MBARARA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: The head of the State House Anti-corruption Unit (SH-ACU) Col Edith Nakalema has implored parents to train youngsters about integrity from childhood to preserve the community.
The Colonel, whose high integrity has earned her a place in the hearts of Ugandans and the top leadership for her leadership in the fight against graft and social injustice was speaking from Mbarara city on Thursday in a Women of Excellence conference under the theme “integrity and its essence in family, church and community”
“Parents who let children know that courage, honesty, and respect for others is more valued than quantifiable wealth or intelligence help kids understand the true meaning of integrity. When your children show integrity, tell them what you admire about their behavior,” Col Nakalema said.
Col. Nakalema is due to start a course at the military’s newest National Defence College in Mukono. She is among the cream of leaders mainly generals who have been selected for a one year training in strategic leadership.
Sources on Wednesday told Newsday that Col. Nakalema will remain as the overseer of the SH-ACU under her role as a senior presidential advisor on corruption.
Speaking from Mbarara Col Nakalema said eroded integrity manifests in selfish people who today are a community burden and have harmed the organizations, families and friends where they belong but that reputation of those who possess no integrity often suffer a blow.
She said that lack of integrity causes anxiety among those without it- and causes stress in work places, families.
“But fortunately, integrity can be built and rebuilt,” She stressed.
Col Nakalema urged parents to enforce integrity citing the biblical analogy of spare the rod and spoil the child,
“I believe that if integrity was instilled in the children by their parents, Uganda would be a lot better than it is now it all starts from home. So I urge parents and all adults to nurture children into individuals of integrity. Children learn from those around them and so I also implore parents to set straight examples and be consistent,” Col Nakalema argued.
Col Nakalema said that people who live with integrity are incorruptible and incapable of breaking the trust of those who have confided in them
“Integrity plays an important role when saying Yes to God. Integrity is defined as the state of being honest and fair. … It is important that you remain true to Word of God. If you teach or preach it, then you are expected to live by it,” Nakalema said.
