KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY:The member of parliament for Butambala Hon Muwanga Kivumbi has warmed government for unspecified number of people rotting in dentions over multiple riots and activism.
Muwanga was echoing National Unity Platform (NUP) president Bobi Wine who recently castigated the government for keeping well over 2000 party members and opposition innocent Ugandans in detention.
Speaking at a burial ceremony in Kasozi village on Monday, Mr Kivumbi said many people are still in hiding over suspected participation in the famous 2009 and 2016 riots.
This comes at a time when security is stepping up manhunt for riot suspects and activists allegedly being notorious including princess Robinah Namutebi a former friend to slain DPC Muhammad Kirumira.
Formerly a staunch member of Buganda’s Nkobazambogo cultural association, Namutebi has been synonymous with city protests since 2009 and has been detained in various dententions where she was humiliated until late Kirumira helped to release her but later went underground after fresh threats.
Bobi and the opposition say such arrest of people need to stop and those on detention must be set free. But security sources said most of those still held and wanted are among the suspected ringleaders and investigation are under way.
Last year government told parliament that about 1,300 suspects from NUP, FDC and others were in detention.
