WAKISO-UGANDA/NEWSDAY; Mengo has announced government has paid it 9bn in the ending financial year 2021/23.
Just as he announced a 9bn payment from government, Mengo’s finance minister Waggwa Nsibirwa was undertaking a non-stop construction at a huge presidential like mansion at Bulwanyi in Wakiso.
The house’s perimeter cuts into nearly an acre that has been curved away from a huge chunk of land.
The developments by Mr. Nsibirwa, have enthused locals at Bulwanyi who have told praised him as a complete investor, who has offered job at his gardens and at the construction site.
During his address to reporters at Bulange Mengo on Tuesday, Mr. Nsibirwa paid homage to government for remitting ‘some money’ but said the kingdom remains indebted by government.
‘’When you add all the debts, those rent arrears…. the land, it is nearly a half a trillion. They however paid 9bn,’ Nsibirwa said. He had been presenting performance report before Lukiiko sub committee on finance, investment and planning.
The financial year ending on July 31, of Buganda Kingdom, has been running at a shs.121bn billion but the kingdom announced it would collect well above that figure by an extra Shs.2bn.
Nsibirwa said in the past five years, coffee production in Buganda has been rejuvenated and boosted by 36percent. He said that many counties have established coffee seedling plants that are resistant to disease.
‘People of Buganda, don’t be derailed buy the coffee agreement between government and an investor. Laws available don’t force us to sell our commodity to one who we don’t wish,’ Nsibirwa said.
He termed the coffee agreement between government and an Italian woman, Enrica Pinetti as childish and that must not worry anyone.
Nsibirwa also presented the figures for the next financial year 2022/23. He said the finances accrue from luwawo, commercial and strategic partners, the central government, diaspora remittances among others.
The key milestone achieved, he said the five strategic objectives have been achieved.
‘’Next year will be bigger and we hope we will achieve much more than we have done this year,’’ he said. Transparency ‘obwerufu’ is one of the core Kingdom objectives.
Nsibirwa is an acclaimed coffee dealer and businessman who has served in different portfolios in Mengo as has his descendants.
