Greater Masaka sub region covering traditional counties of Buddu, Mawogola, Sese, Kooki, and Kabula was last week dominated by the royal visit of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi ll who had come to launch Masaza cup tournament at Masaka Recreation Ground last Saturday.
But the third round of accelerated Mass Vaccination against Covid19 pandemic in Masaka was launched Friday, June 24th 2022 at Masaka Municipal Clinic, last Monday presided over by myself in my capacity as Deputy Resident City Commissioner Masaka City in charge Of Kimaanya Kabonera Division.
The exercise attracted health workers from both Masaka city and Masaka district, community leaders, civil society, technocrats, and this time parish council agents in charge of wards in Masaka City and Parish Chiefs in from Masaka District, have been put on board.
The campaign against Covid 19 Pandemic has been integrated in the Parish Development Model which is now the most popular countrywide and vice versa, and Parish Chefs shall be part of the community mobilizers in this vaccination campaign.
75,210 doses have been given to Masaka district and city and have been dispatched to health center llls at sub counties and former municipal divisions, out of which 62,520 dozes are of Pfizer which are also applicable to children and 12,690 doses of Johnson and Johnson. The latter’s dose is done once no need for a second vaccination unless a booster after six months. The latter needs a first and a second dose and a booster after six months.
The mass vaccination is not only confined to government health centers alone, but also t faith based health centers where it is free, and if it warrants, outreach programs shall be done, if it is the will of God, at churches and mosques.
Earlier in the day on Friday, l also joined Assistant Commissioner in Office of the President in charge of Patriotism, Beatrice Bananuka in passing out 102 cadres who passed out after a five year training in political science and military tactics at Ndegeya Core Primary Teachers’ College Masaka City. . The course content, include among others patriotism, pan Africanism, Social and Economic Transformation and democracy.
Imperialism, tribalism racism and all sorts of sectarianism were condemned and students and staff S mind set changed tremendously.
In my address, l paid tribute to tutors at the PTC for not joining the teachers’ strike and l called upon all the Arts teachers that had taken industrial action to return to classes as their impact is already felt and negotiations between their union leaders and government are in progress.
l however commended traditional schools like Masaka Senior Secondary School. St. Henry’s College Kitovu and Kako Secondary School and also Hill Road Primary School which have contained the strike as teachers are also enumerated by Parents and Teachers’ Associations.
L said that under labor laws, a right to strike is guaranteed if a proper warning is done and a skeleton staff remains to handle emergency cases. In the case of teachers, emergency cases are candidate classes of P.7., S.4. and S.6., but in most of the schools, this was not done.
l was prompted by the Principal who said that her tutors have never gone to strike but called for improvement of their welfare and that of students. She also thanked the First lady and Minister for Education and Sports Mrs. Janet Kataha Museveni who donated them a college bus.
The Assistant Commissioner promised to take their matters to Office of the President to ensure that the welfare of staff and students are improved. She also called for discipline and self-preservation.
Since Sunday June 26th 2022, UPDF has been recruiting S.4. leavers into the army in Greater Masaka. On Sunday, at Masaka Recreation Ground, it was Kalungu, Bukomansimbi, Kalangala, Butambala and other districts, and on Tuesday June 28th, it was Masaka city and district, Ssembabule, Lyantonde, Lwengo, Rakai and Kyotera districts.
L was personally involved in the recruitment of Masaka city and it was smooth as the recruiting officers preferred indigenous people first and others were only considered after the indigenous failed to meet the requirement. Many forced certificates, some were not healthy etc. But compared to police recruitment, UPDF recruitment has recruited indigenous people and it should be commended for that. This is partly due to the massive mobilization which I t did and which political leaders in Masaka did, which was not the case with police recruitment. Prisons recruitment is also going on.
