KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY; A member of parliament is one of the two people arrested after chaotic events in which a student was murdered during Makerere university guild campaigns on Thursday.
Kampala Metropolitan deputy Police spokesperson Luke Oweyeisigire says Kasanda South MP, Frank Kabuye is currently being held at the Central Police Station as investigations continue.
The murdered student has been identified as Betungura Bewatte, a second year law student at Uganda Christian University, Kampala Mengo Campus.
The last image of Bewatte taken during the chaos appears to show him as belonging to a brigade that donned black t-shirts with some members holding clubs and stones.
Police says there was an altercation between supporters of the leading guild presidential candidate, National Unity Platform’s Lawrence Alionzi, aka Dangote and Forum for Democratic Change’s Justus Tumushabe.
The heated race in which Alionzi was the crowd puller had attracted upto 16 contenders, including NRM’s Ibra Hussein.
The Vice chancellor of Makerere university Nawangwe in a letter has cancelled the elections.
Meanwhile, Makerere University Council is later today expected to hold an emergency meeting to address student violence at the Ivory Tower.
