KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY. Government faced a stark humiliation on Saturday as rrganisers of the burial ceremonies of the late Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere rejected plans to hold a lavish send off for the veteran politician.
It comes as the minister for the presidency Milly Babalanda announced President Museveni had ordered for an official burial for Dr. Ssemogerere.
Dr. Ssemogerere died from his home in Lubaga aged 90 on Friday.
Mr. Matiya Lwanga Bwanika, one of the funeral organisers told media practitioners on Saturday that state organised burials are often a scandal and lavish yet Dr. Ssemogerere exercised a life without plenty.
Bwanika said that his team advised the government to arrange and fit within the programs set by his committee.
It was reported President Museveni had directed the body of Dr Ssemogerere to be taken to Kololo for a public requiem mass and viewing of the body, where he would also pay his respects. He had also reportedly wanted the body taken to parliament.
Ssemogerere will be buried at Nkumba on Monday.
On Saturday a his body arrived at his home received by the wife. A mass is ongoing.
