The minister of state for industrialisation, David Bahati, recently had tough time explaining the position of government in regards to the construction of key roads in Kigezi region.
Bahati who promised his voters during elections that roads like that of Muko-Katuna and Muko-Kachwekano-Kamuganguzi would be upgraded by the government had no words to convince the people that the projects would be handled as soon as possible.
It should be noted that in 2021, the government secured an African Development Bank loan worth Shs450b for tarmacking six tourism roads around Lake Bunyonyi in Rubanda and Kabale districts.
The roads are Katuna-Rubaya-Muko (68km), Kyanamira-Nyakigugwe (20km) and Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi-Kabeho (15km). Others are Kachwekano-Kagarama-Hisesero-Muko road (22km), Kamuganguzi-Bukoora-Kitengi-Kekubo road (25km) and Katuna-Ryakarimira-Kamuganguzi via Kyonyo-Kasheregyenyi (15km).
In addition, the proposed upgrade of the 15km Kabale-Bunyonyi and 60km Muko-Katuna roads were pledges made by President Yoweri Museveni and the Ndorwa West legislator Bahati during campaigns that preceded the 2016 general election.
However, some local leaders were furious that the pledges made by the minister were not being fulfilled as residents continued to suffer while using bad roads.
Despite the fact that officials from the Uganda National Roads Authority visited the area, the residents remained pessimistic that nothing would be done.
Residents and local leaders including the Butanda Sub-County chairperson Champion Baker, Lydia Tumushabe, Moreen Asiimwe and Precious Musiimenta are hopeful that once the roads are upgraded, transportation of goods to the markets will be eased.
They, however, asked the Uganda National Roads Authority officials to engage the contractors to avoid sexual exploitation of their children and ensure cooperation.
