KAMPALA: The environmental watchdog, the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has defended Tycoon Sudhir Ruparellia act of pouring thousands of truckloads of soil into the Lake Victoria at his Munyonyo-based Commonwealth Resort Hotel.

A video emerged yesterday in which trucks of soil were being poured into the lake even as the government tries to fight environmental degradation.

In a twist of events, NEMA has defend the act through a tweet.

“This video of Munyonyo works was trending on social media yesterday. As you might aware, Uganda will host the Non Aligned Movement and G-77 Conferences next year. Venue: Munyonyo Common Wealth Resort, as such the compound is being raised to prevent flooding of the gardens.” NEMA said.

“The approval given required management to replant grass that was removed from the same area. However, NEMA will follow up to ensure compliance with approval particularly maintenance of L. Victoria integrity.”
