KAMPALA: Africa Institute for Strategic Services and Development (AFRISA) at Makerere University College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB), was one of the biggest projects the university has been proud of.
However, this pride is soon weaning off because of the alleged influence peddling by the former Principal of COVAB, Prof John David Kabasa.
According to information on its website, AFRISA is a special institute of Makerere University in partnership with Government of Uganda functioning as a center of excellence to promote hands on skilling, enterprise development, employment creation,value addition, technology adoption and cooperative. At AFRISA you can start your career and business at certificate and diploma levels and gradually upgrade to degrees.
Afrisa has different value chain programs for both certificate and diploma.
Prof John David Kabasa the former Principal College of Veterinary Medicine Animal Resources and Biosecurity CoVAB, is the brain behind AFRISA and the Principal Investigator.
It was such a vibrant project and it’s boasts of pioneering the first off campus graduations in areas of Western Uganda and graced by President Museveni and his wife.
However, currently the picture has completely changed.
Sources at the college,put the blame on Prof Kabasa for failing to make firm foundation in terms of institute leadership.
It’s alleged that after Dr Michael Kansiime (RIP),who was a Head of Secretariat,left, Kabasa hand picked Mr. Felex Okello one of the pioneer students of Afrisa to head the Secretariat,it alleged that with pick Okello who had been familiar with the University system, Prof Kabasa aimed at continue influencing the day today management of AFRISA.
Sources say that the resourceful work force at AFRISA has long found their way elsewhere, bringing down the good work of the Institute.
It also alleged the with influence peddling Kabasa employed one his relatives one Nansubuga to oversee the AFRISA activities at Nakyesasa sources also with this Kabasa aimed at following the activities at the Nakyesasa.
The unfortunate bit of it is that the once vibrant AFRISA projects at Nakyesasa are also weaning.
Allegations are the the shoe project is corapsing,the feed project,the fish project.
Our efforts to talk to Prof Kabasa were futile as he continued fail to pick our calls.
Dr. Tweyogyerere, the college refered our reporter to Nakyesasa as he said that the AFRISA management is no longer at the college. Felex Okello the Head of Secretariat at AFRISA,in a whatsapp messages said he was upcountry.
