Hon. Were Abubaker Wandagho, the National Chairperson of the UMSC Electoral Commission, led a team in conducting a mapping and assessment exercise for the proposed creation of new Muslim districts, in line with the UMSC Constitution as provided for under Article 2(4).
The exercise commenced on July 25, 2024, with the team attending a special sitting of the Iganga Muslim District Council, convened to consider the proposal to elevate Namutumba to a new Muslim district. As the parent district, the council members unanimously passed the resolution. Later that day, the team traveled to Namutumba for mapping and assessment.
A similar exercise was conducted at Kamuli Muslim District, where the council passed a resolution to create Buyende Muslim District. The team also toured Buyende for assessment. Hon. Wandagho informed the media that the commission was satisfied with the progress so far, noting that the proposed new Muslim districts in the Busoga Muslim region met the requirements stipulated in the UMSC Constitution. These requirements include the presence of new mosques, madrasas, secular and theological schools, accommodations for sheikhs and imams, income-generating projects such as lock-up shops and abattoirs, availability of land for future projects, and support from volunteers and well-wishers willing to provide various forms of assistance to operationalize Muslim activities.
According to the roadmap, the team will resume the exercise next week in Karamoja and expects to complete it in Toro Muslim District. The purpose is to assess whether Amudat and Kyegegwa could be included in the list of newly created Muslim districts.
