THE Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) has criticized the arrest and prosecution of anti-corruption nude protestors, calling for their immediate release.
Mariam Wangadya the commission chairperson has told this reporter that the three young women who were peacefully walking to Parliament calling for the Speaker to resign over alleged corruption, holding just placards were showing their constitutional right to be heard by their legislators.
Wangadya said it is unfortunate that despite causing no threat to the public or any person, these women were arrested, charged with the offense of Common Nuisance, and remanded to Luzira prison until September 12, 2024.
Wangadya called these charges as outrageous, and said that the alleged offense had no victim and never caused any harm the public.
“These are young girls who were only armed with placards, Parliament is the place where all their elected leaders sit. They had every cause to demand to be given audience,” Wangadya said.
She called upon the director of public prosecution (DPP) to drop these charges with immediate effect.
