Shock As Teachers From Sudhir’s Kampala Parents School Protest Over 600,000 Monthly Salary

By Angel Lubowa

KAMPALA

THE old saying that, ‘ not all that gilters is gold’ has come to pass as teachers from one of Kampala’ s finest school protest low pay despite rising standards of living in the country.

The move has reportedly shocked a section of Ugandans including parents, teachers from other not so affluent schools and the general public.

The protest was staged on Wednesday 22,2024 morning when teachers staged a protest citing poor pay and alleged unequal treatment.

They held placards while chanting slogans, decrying their inability to afford tuition for their children to study at the very school where they work let alone affording general life with such a monthly pay.

According to Media reports, these teachers said they cannot afford to have their children study at the school they teach because they can’t pay up or are given any reductions to do it.

Nile post one of Uganda’s leading online atleast showed a picture of teachers holding placards as they demonstrated.

The teachers claim they are paid Shs600,000 per month, a figure they say pales in comparison to other staff members, such as security guards, who are reportedly earning well.

Kampala Parents School is owned by property magnate Sudhir Ruparelia.

The school where atleast every teacher would die to work until this teachers protest is
located on the foothills of Naguru Hill.

Given it’s exceptional academic performance it attracts pupils from well to do families and the fees structure is premium.

It was founded by Ghulam Kadri, an educationist, who built its reputation as one of Uganda’s top-performing primary institutions.

But in 2004, Sudhir Ruparelia bought it through his Ruparelia Group and subsequently expanded its facilities and enhanced its reputation for academic excellence.

There is also allegations of foreign staff especially of Indian descent being favoured in terms of remuneration.

By press time efforts to get a fair comment from management – including Sudhir’s son Rajiv Ruparelia were still unsuccessful.
