Dr Besigye and his co-accused Obeid Lutaale Kamulegeya and Captain Denis Oola were Friday 21 February 2025 charged for treason and misprison of treason in the Nakawa Chief magistrate’s court.

Prosecution alleged that the charges were committed in various countries including Switzerland, Greece, Kenya and Uganda where they reportedly made meetings and a plotted to overthrow the current government by soliciting arms and financial support.

They were then remanded until March 7th 2025 by Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi who did not allow them to say anything about the charges against them on the basis that they are capital in nature and can only be tried by the High Court.

The Assistant DPP Lino Anguzu informed Court that investigations were still going and therefore their commitment to High Court needed more time.

That implied that Dr Besigye’s hopes of getting any bail would have to wait notwithstanding.
He has ended his hunger strike opposing being subjected to military courts but his bail process takes a new long legal process.

His production at a civilian court emanates from a historical supreme court ruling that nullified any civilian trial in military courts recently which also left such courts defused and wanting new amendments to survive.

During the Nakawa trials , Dr Besigye’s lawyers led by Erias Lukwago complained about the military guards at such a court, the need to Besigye taken to a prison facility of his choice given his deteriorating health status and that he was willing to meet the costs of his treatment at a hospital of his choice.

However prosecution said the military were present because
Captain Oola was remanded to military courts but that with his remanding in Luzira that could stop.

On Besigye’s health both prosecution and court said the matter was technical and needed evidence but that his lawyers were at liberty to apply for bail in a superior court with jurisdiction.
Besigye’s legal team conformed to this saying they will apply for Bail in the High Court.

Besigye a four-time presidential candidate faced treason charges in 2005 when he was accused of leading the People’s Redemption Army, a rebel outwit started by reneged UPDF officers but the State lost .
