KAMPALA
The Uganda electral commission and political parties have called for calm after political tension escalates in Kawempe North.
There has been increasing violent clashes between security forces and the National Unity Platform (NUP) leadership and supporters during a campaign event for their candidate, Elias Nalukoola.
NRM which is tussling NUP is represented by Faridah Nambi who has family ties to NRM vice chairman Hajj Moses Kigongo.
Bullets , teargas and other violent engagements are rife and many people are reportedly injured, arrested or abducted.
The confrontation saw police, the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JAT), and the Special Forces Command (SFC) deploy force to disperse NUP campaigners, firing teargas and reportedly beating and arresting several people.
Mr Julius Musinguzi has warned political actors in Kawempe North to desist from violence saying elections must not become a tag of war.
He said all candidates irrespective of their political affiliation must follow the law and each candidate has a right to a clear campaign.
Meanwhile the Democratic party has lashed out at NRM for always being violent in by elections and elections at large.
The party through it’s spokesman, Mr Ismail Kirya while condemning the violence which security is emanating in Kawempe North said if the NRM wishes not to be opposed then it’s better it abolishes elections.
Initially the NUP president Mr Robert Kyaggulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine whose presence at his candidates , Nalukoola’s registration attracted security apparatus to disperse supporters condemned the on going tension.
“While the NRM candidate and those aligned with them have been holding processions and rallies without incident, these criminals came in with orders to block us,” said Bobi Wine.
“Many comrades are in hospitals with bullet wounds, broken legs, and other injuries…” he added.
