RENOWN city Advocate, Mr James Kayondo is bringing in new life in the NUP flag bearers contest of naming the most able candidate to represent the party in Makindye East constituency.
This follows Mr Kayondo’s decision to offer him self to represent the constituency which some voters claim has had very poor representation. He picked forms of expression of interest to represent NUP and awaits if the party selection committee will grace his request.
A section of the electorates told this Media that successive Mps have failed to fit in the shoes of former Mps like Hon Benedict Mutyaba and Hon Mike Mabikke to some extent.
Kayondo’s entry in to the race may become a game changer given the performance of the incumbent MP Derrick Nyeko who won the 2021 polls courtesy of the then NUP wave that ushered in various leadership at different opposition levels.
Speaking to selected Media over the weekend, Mr Kayondo who is a partner with Shield Advocates in Kampala said he is looking forward to serving his constituency.
“As an advocate and auditor I am the right person to serve Makindye East the home of great responsible people of our time. When you visit the Hansard, very little performance is credited to our current representative and I think Makindye East deserves more than that” said Mr Kayondo.
He said he determined to eloquently deliberate in the next house making good laws, tackling major flaws of his voters especially unemployment amongst the youths and women.
He also contemplates revisiting the domestic relations law which he said has many grey areas
Nyeko who had been a councillor in Makindye Division council abandoned his party to scoop a NUP ticket and automatically winning the seat.
Today over seven people have expressed interest to unseat Nyeko whose performance is allegedly wanting.
Recently Hon Nyeko got a taste of voter fury after locals in his constituency sent him packing, accusing him of disappearing for five years and only showing up now as the 2026 elections draw near.
In a dramatic video which made the rounds on social media, Nyeko was seen surrounded by a furious crowd, trying to offer assistance. But instead of welcoming him, the residents flatly rejected his help, demanding to know where he had been since securing their votes.
“We don’t need your help now. Where were you all this time?” some locals shouted, as others ordered him to leave immediately.
The video, shared widely on X (formerly Twitter) by Patro Uganda, ignited debate, with many noting that Makindye East voters have a history of ditching non-performing MP after just one term.
Other aspirants are busy trying to promote their cause in Makindye East amongst them former NBS journalist Robert Sekidde, popularly known as Tuff B.
Tuff B, picked up expression of interest forms from the National Unity Platform (NUP) headquarters.
Sekidde said his campaign will focus on bridging the gap between job seekers and potential employers, describing unemployment as a major concern for residents of Makindye East.
