The two seems to be politically entangled to big shots with in NUP complicating their differences the more.
The leading opposition party, NUP may be forced to throw out both Kampala MP, Hon Shamim Malende and her opponent Zahara Luyirika unless they stop their on going political madness.
The two politicians are allegedly on a high smear campaign which is said to be hurting the party.
The continued smear campaigns and blackmail is reportedly bleeding indiscipline and divisionism with in NUP and the party is growing impatient.
Malende is the incumbent Kampala woman lawmaker, while Luyirika serves as speaker for the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
The rivalry between the two started months ago when Luyirika expressed interest in Malende’s seat.
Luyirika and supporters built their campaign on the grounds that Malende has, for most of her term since the 2021 election victory, been in hospital and did not ably represent the people of Kampala in Parliament.
The two have deeply divided the party, with each aspirant creating her faction in a bid to obtain the party flag.
It’s alleged that both parties have backers with in NUP’s top leadership at personal level , politics aside.
Whereas the NUP secretary general Mr Lewis Rubongoya is said to be closer to Zahara at personal levels, the NUP president, Hon Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine and wife Barbie Kyagulanyi are said to still have Malende at heart.
This factor had helped keep the two political enemies stronger and goinf.
However NUP is now set to intervene and has issued a warning to both to end the blackmail and smear campaign or they get both disqualified.
NUP Deputy President for Buganda, Muwanga Kivumbi, said that Malende-Luyirika differences had divided and weakened the party.
“The Party, having taken note of the toxic environment in the Kampala Woman MP race, has convened a meeting this morning to emphasize the need for discipline during this process. Candidates Hon. Shamim Malende and Hon. Zahara Luyirika have been tasked to commit to a respectful campaign, devoid of smear campaigns and blackmail. We urge their supporters to also adhere to our very first party value: discipline,” Kivumbi was reportedly quoted in the Media.
