Retired Gen Salim Saleh and chief cordinator of operation wealth creation Monday 1st September urged Uganda’s ambassadors to synchronize foreign policy with the country’s economic transformation agenda, warning that missions abroad must deliver concrete results for farmers and exporters.
Gen Saleh was speaking as chief guest at the opening of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ five-day Annual Ambassadors’ Conference at Gulu University on Monday, Saleh said Uganda’s diplomats must act as frontline agents for national development rather than simply political envoys.
“Our diplomats must synchronize with Uganda’s national interests. This requires deeper coordination, strategic planning, and alignment between the Foreign Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” Saleh told the gathering of ambassadors, deputy heads of mission, senior government officials and sector partners.
He said that the country must increase earnings from non-traditional exports such as gold, tourism, and remittances but agriculture should not be neglected .
“International cooperation requires deeper analysis of partners’ strengths and closer integration between diplomats and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Only through strategic coordination can Uganda advance its economic and diplomatic agenda,” he added.
The week-long conference, running under the theme “Strengthening the Foreign Service’s Contribution to National Development”, will review the performance of Uganda’s missions abroad, debate a draft diaspora policy, and set benchmarks for the coming year.
