Nubia Li yesterday spoke out after his dramatic arrest on Tuesday, saying security operatives released him later that night after driving him “around in circles” before dropping him off at his home.

Ali Buken, was picked up outside the Electoral Commission (EC) offices in Ntinda shortly after filing his nomination papers. He is the party’s official candidate for Nakawa division mayorship.

Eyewitnesses told this Media that armed police officers surrounded him as he exited the gates, before escorting him into a patrol vehicle.

“I was arrested at the EC offices right after my nomination. After being driven around in circles, they eventually dropped me off at home. They claimed I was planning to hold a procession. Crazy!” he wrote.

The opposition says Nubian Li, a long-time confidante of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, is among several high-profile opposition aspirants whose treatment during nominations has raised concerns over political space ahead of the 2026 elections.

His release leaves several others in detention including party members Sauda Madaada and Alex Mufumbiro.
