The head of State House Anti Corruption unit ( SHACU), Brig Gen Henry Isoke has called for patriotism and positive mind with in Uganda’s health sector for meaningful reduction of Corruption.
This he said on Thursday during an interactive engagement on the fight against corruption with 404 staff and students of Jinja School of Nursing and Midwifery undergoing a Patriotism and Mindset Change Training at the School.
The training was organized by the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps Uganda.
Brig Gen Isoke urged them to uphold patriotism and mindset change as key weapons against corruption.
He emphasized that patriotism in the health sector is not just about talk but a daily discipline seen through integrity, empathy, discipline, and teamwork in service to patients.
“Every honest act of care is an act of patriotism,” he said. The General also quoted President H.E. Yoweri K. Museveni’s urging that every citizen must “fight corruption wherever you are, fight for your portion.”
Brig Gen Isoke also called for a mindset transformation, reminding the health workers that corruption starts with individual choices. He urged them to uphold the values of accountability, stewardship, and professionalism.
Inspite of continued reports of corruption in a number of government institutions, including within the health sector, He observed that government has done alot in improving health services in the country including, expanding ICU capacity, reducing maternal deaths, enabling a sharp drop in mother-to-child HIV transmission and mortality rate.
In his closing remarks, the General warned that corruption in healthcare doesn’t just steal medicine; it steals lives and the future of our nation. He urged the student nurses and midwives to prepare to do their part in the fight against corruption where they will be employed.
He also thanked the Commissioner, National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, Ms Hellen Seku and her team for their efforts to promote patriotism among the youth in the country.
The General was welcomed by Ms Mulabiza Mebra, the Institution’s Principal, Ms Zalwango Madina, Principal Officer in charge of higher institutions, National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps, and Mr Waiswa Zawayo, Co-ordinator Patriotism, Iganga.
