The police guards who were attached to Willy Mayambala during the elections were his main oppressors when he was out to solicit for votes, the former independent presidential candidate has revealed.
Appearing before the Human Rights Committee of parliament led by Vice-chair Anges Taaka Wejuli, which is investigating cases of violence in the just concluded polls, Mayambala said his rights were greatly violated by the police guards assigned to him during the campaigns.
Mayambala trailed in the January 14th, 2021 general elections with only 15,014 votes. According to Mayambala, his ten-man security team blocked him from going to several campaign venues simply because he didn’t have a personal vehicle. The former presidential candidate also noted that he was often bullied by the security officers who claimed that he did not have money for fuel.
“Sometimes I had to jump over fences to elude my security and this would lead to chaos as the officers pursued me,” . Mayamala said.
He also decried the failure by the Electoral Commission to make special considerations for him since his a person with disability-PWDs.
Independent presidential candidate, Joseph Kabuleta who also appeared before the same committee. He said that his major challenge was paying for several venues and not using them because of orders from above.
Angelline Osegge, the Soroti Woman MP who is a member on the committee that said they will consider meeting the Electoral Commission on the issue of allowances for the security teams and the issues by Mayambala about his security detail.
