The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) says it has dispatched battled-hardened General Kayanja Muhanga to investigate circumstances under which al-Shabaab terrorist over-run the army’s location in Somalia on Friday.

A statement issued by Brig Felix Kulayigye, the UPDF spokesperson, on Saturday said no stone will be left unturned to ascertain the truth.

Kulayigye also asked the country to remain calm as the probe gets underway.

“A team of UPDF under the leadership of the Commander of Land Forces, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, has been dispatched to Somalia to ascertain the circumstances under which the attack happened and devise the way forward,” Kulayigye said.

“UPDF condemns the attack on her gallant soldiers by Al-Shabaab terrorists. Nonetheless, this will not deter our commitment our commitment to ATMIS mandate of ensuring African peace and stability,” the spokesperson added.

Reports indicate that Ugandan peacekeepers were attacked by al-Shabaab in Buulu Mareer, 120km south-west on Mogadishu in Lower Shabelle region.

Uganda is one of the troop contributing countries to the African Union Transmission Mission (ATMIS) battling terrorists in Somalia. The other troop contributing countries are Burundi, Djibouti, Kenya and Ethiopia.

Although the terrorists claim to have killed more than 150 Ugandan fighters, captured others and burnt a number of military weapons, the UPDF said it is yet to establish the number of casualties.
