KAMPALA: A Member of Parliament has shocked fellow legislators after claiming that condoms supplied to his district do not fit the voters.

Geofrey Kayemba Ssolo told Parliament on Wednesday that people from his Bukomansimbi South Constituency openly told him about their experience in using government condoms.

“The other thing which is very crucial, it is about the condoms that they (ministry of health) procured. I got a complaint from my area, they brought condoms of very small sizes which couldn’t fit the users,” the MP said.

“At the end of the day, they didn’t use them, they burnt them and I am sure some people lost their lives,” he added.

Bukomansimbi which is located in the central region has an estimated HIV prevalence rate of 5.4%. The national prevalence rate is 5.5%.

The district is mostly inhabited by Baganda (77%) followed by Banyankole (9%), Banyarwanda (8%) the rest are small tribes.

Kayemba’s comments came during a presentation by the Parliament’s HIV/Aids committee which submitted that the high rates of HIV prevalence among prisoners were due to homosexuality practices amongst inmates.

“The committee further observed that the high HIV prevalence in prison facilities could be attributed to same sex intimacy, delays in the window period and hygiene purposes,” Sarah Netelisire Kayagi, Chairperson HIV Committee, said.
