KAMPALA: Judiciary PS Pius Bigirimana came under fire as MPs tasked him with explaining the sh5.514b that Judiciary spent in repairing vehicles in a one year.
This came after the Auditor General revealed that a sample on 26 vehicles, indicated each vehicle visited the garage an average of eight times, with each visit costing Ugandan taxpayers sh26.488m.
The Judiciary PS informed Parliament and auditors that these were old vehicles with purchase dates as far as 2005, but they cannot be disposed of because they are attached to judicial officers such as judges and justices where an alternative vehicle would be required immediately, so the disposal would be phased in line with acquisition and replacement.
“The vehicles we have are very old, but I am happy to inform this Committee that we have managed to procure some vehicles and the repair bills are going to come down,” Bigirimana said.
“In the subsequent submissions, certainly you will not have these repairs and we thank you for giving us some money to have vehicles bought,” he added.
