Police in Bufumira sub county on the island district of Kalangala will have to work extra hard to repair their image which residents and the local leadership are now regarding with suspicion.

Buyondo Musa, the L C 1 Chairperson of Kitobo Landing Site in Bufumira says the area Police have stopped serving any purpose on the island as they allegedly connive with criminal suspects who pay for their release without being charged for offences they are arrested over.

The residents are incensed over a recent incident Nanyonjo Winnie, a single mother when on Good Friday, Police allegedly released Kasigirwa Twailu who destroyed a resident’s properties, stoned her and injured family members while pretending to be drunk. Nanyonjo is still nursing wounds since then.

Nanyonjo says that when she inquired about the progress of the case, Magezi Hannington who is the CID officer at Kitobo Police Post informed her that the suspect was sick and thus released to go for medication, which she doubted.

But when contacted by this Newsday, Magezi denied releasing the violent suspect said instead that Twailu had escaped from custody, having disappeared from their cell at night and that police is hunting for him. The CID officer also dismissed the Chairperson’s allegations of police conniving with Criminals.

Now, residents and LCs have requested the office of Kalangala RDC get interested in the matter and conduct of the police.
