KAMPALA: Members of the Mpologoma clan have threatened to storm Mengo, the seat of Buganda Kingdom, over an unresolved land dispute with former Operation Wembley boss Maj Gen Elly Kayanja.

According to reports, a row has erupted between the Mpologoma clan members and Kayanja over ownership of 25 acres at Lwadda village in Matugga, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district.

The clan members claim unknown group of people descended on their ancestral land (obutaaka) and started cutting down trees and clearing the bush. The cleared land was then subdivided into plots for sale.

The members also claim that although Kayanja had leased the land from Buganda Land Board more 49 years ago, the lease had since expired and was not about to be renewed.

In subsequent meetings aimed at resolving the dispute, Gen Kayanja proposed to give the clan members three acres, something they interpreted as mockery.

The meeting which sat in Matugga had a team from Kayanja’s side, police officers and representatives from the Mpologoma clan.

Hajj Yunus Ntale, the Mpologoma Clan spokesperson told local media they would not allow the General to get a new lease.

“Our next step is to mobilise all members of Mpologoma Clan to storm BLB offices and demand our land title. We have been patient for long and we feel betrayed,” he told a local daily.

Buganda Kingdom Spokesperson Israel Kaziibwe told the media that the kingdom was aware of the Mpologoma clan land issue, which would soon be resolved.
