Lira Business Man Remanded Over Wetland Petro Station

The Lira based business man who ignored lawful warnings and constructed a petro station in the wetland has met face to face with justice.
Okello Lawrence who was resently arrested by the State House Anti Corruption unit working together with Uganda police and the office of the DPP was Thursday 5,2024,arraigned before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court for constructing a fuel station in a wetland.
Court heard that Okello did this in total disregard of the the conditions set in the Certificate of Environmental and Social Impact Assessment by NEMA.
He has been remanded till 16/12/2024
It was alleged that between March and December 2024, the accused stubbonly continued to carry out construction of a fuel station in Pece swamp, Gulu city, in total violation of the physical planning laws, building control laws and NEMA certification.
Investigations have revealed that Okello Lawrence is a reknown encroacher on gazzeted areas including wetlands, forest reserves and other public land.
Further investigations into his alleged involvement in numerous acts of enchroachment on protected areas are still ongoing.
