MAKINDYE
Oppositional figure Dr Kiiza Besigye and his friend, Hajj Obeid Lutale haven’t been produced Monday 3, January 2025 before the General Court Martial in Makindye as expected following the Supreme Court rulling which stopped all cases involving civilians.
Army spokesman acting Maj Gen Felix Kulayigye told CBS FM that they were still waiting for a legal explanation of the attorney general, Kilyowa Kiwanuka.
Besigye and co accused had been. scheduled to appear at Makindye court martial before the ruling directed otherwise.
The Supreme Court ruling, declared that the court martial lacks the constitutional authority to try civilians and ordered an immediate halt to such proceedings.
At the court, officers told media that Besigye and Lutale were not expected until further notice.
But Besigye lead lawyers and Kampala Lord mayor, Hajj Erias Lukwago told media that he was not returning to Court martial any more saying the ruling relieved it of any such powers to deal with his clients.
Lukwago and his legal team were instead planning to receive Dr Besigye at all costs.
But military sources said that hearings would be rescheduled for next week following appropriate consultations.
This comes at a time when president Museveni dismissed the Court’s decision insisting military courts would have to continue albeit with some necessary amendments asserting that Uganda is not governed by judges alone.
