While addressing the DP delegates who attended the party’s national council in Soroti city, the president general and Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs in president Museveni’s government assured them that he has never sold the party to NRM.
He called upon the national council to terminate the cooperation agreement which resulted into his ministerial post if they found it wanting.
But does it really matter if Mr Mao start changing his political dancing style especially that 2026 polls are around the corner?
It’s more likely that like any party president , he wants to remain relevant to his party and trying to gather any warning muscle and possibly announce his candidature after all it works either way.
The party can remain politically visible but most importantly he can be weaving a new cooperation agreement in future.
Such development can be disaster to those who thinks in terms of political change .
The readings on most staunch DP members seems a question whether Mao’s cooperation with NRM has not left the party a step weaker and one wonders why Uganda’s opposition will ever develop any smart politics like it happens in other countries on the continent.
Suffice it to say that Uganda’s opposition is cosmetic and for convenience basically for personal gain, showing off and some sort of employment .
That’s why you will never find them working together for a noble cause.
Let’s take the incoming polls for example, the NRM party having been in power for almost fourty year appears to be going to have a walk over .
Save for other factors, the opposition it’s self is giving NRM an easy ride as long as each party plans to field its own candidate.
This is not to mean that a united opposition is assured of winning the 2026 polls but even when they lose they would have given NRM party a feel of it’s campaign.
When you watch the Kenyan and the Senegalese politics for instance, such unions makes them look politically mature, meaningful and smarter at the ballot paper.
For those who know some bit of politics, the major role of political parties is to fight and win state power via polls but a twelve candidates campaign is more less a political joke intended to hand over a sure win to the already strong incumbent.
For that much therefore , Mr Mao’s new wisdoms looks very misguided and only good at further destroying the terrain.
In fact it was misguided from July 20, 2022 when he entered a deal with president Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe to cooperate which culminated into his being appointed a minister a move which further divided DP and weakened the opposition.
How about if Mr Mao had joined hands with NUP, FDC , UPC and other opposition to form a more meaning ful opposition?
The weak opposition whether by NRM poaching, baiting or self will since 2021 has only handed , Mr Museveni and NRM a great time running the government with less signs of opposition checks and balance at prey.
While NUP top leadership took alot of time flying abroad and partying, FDC got more involved in divisionism giving birth to a baby named PFF much as UPC did the same.
The cost of this political nonsense is nothing but only keeping all opposition at it’s low.
