Samuel Kasumba was crushed to death by a running sugar mill during his night shift.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 3:50am on March 12, 2025.

Kasumba was reportedly cleaning an old boiler while it was still running when the machine pulled him in, killing him instantly. His body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Following the accident, workers downed their tools in protest, citing repeated workplace accidents at the factory.

Press reports indicate that at least three workers have died at GM Sugar Factory in the past year, while several others have sustained injuries.

The territorial police in Njeru Division have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to Kasumba’s death and to assess the factory’s safety protocols.

Authorities have urged factory management to enforce stricter safety measures and ensure compliance with industrial regulations to prevent further tragedies.
