Early inquiries are pointing at fault electric connections for the Friday fire which gutted the historical house of Late Dr Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere.
Residents in Lubaga just metres away from the Catholic Church cathedral where the house is located told media that the afternoon fire started from the upper floor and spread rapidly, despite efforts by local residents and the fire brigade.
“We heard a loud crack, then saw smoke pouring out of the roof,” said a neighbour, Margaret Namaganda.
Another witness, Joseph Kalema, described scenes of panic as residents tried to salvage what they could. “We grabbed buckets, basins—anything—to help, but the fire was too strong.”
Police rushed to the scene to contain the fire but many house properties and the entire roof burnt out.
Indications are pointing to faulty electric connections according to a police source.
Dr. Ssemogerere, died in 2022 at age 90, was a towering figure in Uganda’s politics, leading the Democratic Party for over two decades and serving in multiple cabinet roles.
