The accident occurred at around 5:30 am in Zigoti, Mityana District.
It was carrying pupils and staff of Daystar primary school, in Makindye Kampala.

Uganda Police spokesperson for traffic, ASP Michael Kananura told media that the bus—registration number UAP 829U and operated by HMK Transporters Ltd.—was returning from a school tour in Kasese when the driver reportedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the vehicle to overturn.

Records indicate that two pupils died instantly, while eleven others, including four tour guides and the school’s head teacher, sustained various injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities.

The names of the deceased pupils were not immediately released, pending family notification.

Kananura said initial findings point to fatigue as a major cause of the crash.

“This tragic incident serves as a stern reminder to all school administrators that the safety and well-being of pupils must be treated with the utmost seriousness,” he said.

The crash adds to a worrying trend of road traffic incidents in Uganda.

According to the 2023 Annual Crime Report by the Uganda Police Force, over 20,300 road crashes were recorded that year, claiming more than 4,800 lives—many of them children and pedestrians. Fatigue, reckless driving, and mechanical failure were listed among the leading causes.
