Security forces mounted an extensive deployment in Nyendo, restricting Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu from using Masaka’s traditional entry route, a move officials say is meant to prevent business disruption but which supporters condemn as discriminatory and intimidating.
There was heavy deployment of police and army personnel in Nyendo town, Masaka, on Saturday as security forces moved to block National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi from accessing Masaka’s central business area ahead of his scheduled campaign rallies.
Kyagulanyi, who is set to address two rallies—one at Sazza Grounds in Nyendo–Mukungwe Division and another at Kyabira in Kimaanya–Kabonera Division—was stopped at the Nyendo entry point, a traditional gateway into Masaka City used by many presidential candidates in past elections.Masaka Sub-Region Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said the restriction was agreed upon during prior engagements with Kyagulanyi’s team, insisting the decision was necessary to prevent disruption of business activities in the city centre.
“We agreed with his team that they would use the Mbarara Bypass instead of passing through the central business district,” Kasirye said.“Our aim is to allow business to continue smoothly in Masaka City. We do not want unnecessary congestion or disruption.”
However, NUP supporters in Masaka condemned the move, calling it discriminatory and unfair compared to how previous presidential candidates were handled.
“This is our city, and we have a right to welcome our candidate,” said one frustrated supporter in Nyendo.
