NUP selects leader of opposition today

Kampala. The National Unity Platform (NUP) party is meeting today to select the Leader of Opposition in Parliament (Lop) for the 11th Parliament, according to Mr Mathias Mpuuga, NUP its deputy president in charge of central region.

Article 81 0f the Constitution as amended creates the position of the LoP to oversee the affairs of the Opposition in Parliament. 

Although NUP leaders will be meeting, the final say may have to come from the party’s leader Bobi Wine who chairs all the party organs.

Those thought to take the LoP, according to insiders include Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga,  Busiro South MP Medard Sseggona and Mr John Baptist Nambeshe MP for Manjiya County.

But NUP’s secretary General Rubongoya said that everyone of their MPs has got a potential to take the seat.

According to the Administration of Parliament amendment Act of 2006 the LoP’s principal role is to keep the government in check. He also appoints the Shadow Cabinet and is a member of the business committee that determines and Parliament business. He is also a member of the Parliamentary Commission. 

NUP will also head other critical portfolios including the opposition Chief Whip as well as the four accountability committees of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Committee on Commissions Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE), Local Government Accounts Committee (LGAC), and Committee on Government Assurances.
