Gomba Lions have clinched their fifth title in the Airtel Masaza cup final that was played behind closed doors with only 200 fans because of the COVID-19 restrictions.
Gomba Lions thrashed their Buddu rivals 3-1 at the St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on Saturday afternoon. Tournament top scorer Charles Bale got Gomba’s first goal as early as the third minute of the game. However, Buddu responded quickly with an equalizer from Titus Ssematimba in the 8th minute with a bullet header from a corner kick by Sharif Sengendo.
Gomba continued pushing and eventually got a second goal through Gorge Kaddu in the 12th minute with wide range free-kick following a foul against Jackson Ssemugabi. Defender Gift Fred pushed their lead in the 18th minute leading to 3:1 by halftime. Gomba maintained the lead to full time.
This is Gomba’s fifth trophy after their 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2017 victory in the Masaza cup. Buddu lost their third final of the tournament. The Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga officiated the 2020 Masaza Cup tournament final. The final had initially been scheduled for January 21st 2021 at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru.
However, it was postponed by the organizing committee to March 6th, 2021 to allow for better preparations. Before the final, there was a third-place playoff match between Busiro and Bulemeezi at mid-day. Busiro took 3rd place after beat Bulemeezi 5 -3 in penalty shootouts.
