The Rwandan government has moved to deescalate the tensions between Kigali and Kampala after their national army the Rwandese Defense Forces (RDF) moved to free a Uganda People’s defense Forces soldier intercepted on Saturday.

Pvt Bakuru Muhuba was intercepted by the RDF day patrol for alleged violation of international boarders, in the Northern Province, Burera district.

“He was dressed in UPDF uniform armed with a light machine gun with its 100rounds. The soldier also had a binocular, a cell phone and his military identification,” a statement released by RDF on Sunday said.

Bukuru was arrested at 2:45 Pm.

A statement issued by RDF on Sunday said that the Rwandan government was in the process of repatriating Bakuru.

The move will deescalate the already heightened tensions. After the news of the interception of Bakuru, UPDF increased into motorized and foot patrol along the border.

Relations between the two countries are at their lowest after the Rwandans decided to close the common boarders at Gatuna and Cyanika nearly two years ago.

Kisoro District Resident District Commissioner Capt Peter Mugisha said that Baruku is attached to the 32nd division, Nyakabende.

Many Ugandans who have tried to cross the boarders have been often shot dead by the RDF.
