Mukono-Uganda/Newsday: Suspected killer of a 19 year old Makerere University student Desire Mirembe absconded from a court appearance for the second time in a row.

But Presiding Justice Kaweesa ordered the sureties to ensure Dr. Mathew Kirabo is brought to court in the next sitting slated for November 17.

“Failure to produce him will mean each of you as sureties will have to pay Shs 50m cash and will be held until he appears,” Kaweesa ordered.

Kirabo allegedly killed Mirembe, his former girlfriend in July 2015 in Lugazi after a disagreement and dumped her body in Lugazi sugarcane plantation.
Kirabo was prosecuted in 1015 but bailed with his mother Imelda Wabulendo and his uncle Benard Mbayo standing as sureties.

The third surety, Nelson, died. Asked about thehe whereabouts of his son Wobulendo replied she hasn’t seen Kirabo in a while.

Kirabo’s lawyer Charles Dalton Opwonya told court that they were looking for his client from all angles and promised court “we will get him here”.

Kirabo in a video confession played in court last month agreed to have killed  Mirembe and and at the time led the police where be said he dumped Mirembe body.

Hearing of Kirabo’s case has stalled since 2015 but was fixed and restarted on October 8 this year after  the intervention of the head of the State House Anti Corruption Unit SH-ACU headed by Col.Nakalwma and Principal judge Nzeija.

Last week, Kirabo had been expected in court but skipped court prompting presiding judge to issue arrest warrant.

State Attorney Ms.Happiness Ainebyoona on Wednesday told court that government has put in a lot of resources into this case and therefore requested court to put tough conditions and execute the bond of the sureties.

On Wednesday Sisimuka chief executive Frank Gashumba said justice was on the way. Mr Emmanuel Musoke the father of the deceased said he expected justice.

“At least with the punitive action faces by the sureties, thwy will have to produce the suspect. This time the police has done its job even with some figures in the judiciary attempting to frustrating justice to prevail,” Gashumba said.

Mirembe disappeared and her body was recovered in a sugarcane plantation on July 7,2015. Kirabo who was her girlfriend then confessed to have killed Mirembe and was arrested but later given bail in November 2016  as he even completed his studies at Makerere University and has been out of prison.
