EGYPT. Dr Mahmoud Mohieldin, UN Climate Change High Level Champion for Egypt, participated on Monday in a session on the role of youth and civil society organizations (CSOs) in the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) planned to be held in Sharm El Sheikh next November, and the climate action in general.
Mohieldin shedded the light, during his participation in the session held on the sidelines of the meetings of the subsidiary organs of COP in Bonn, Germany, on five main climate issues that international community should work on in the coming period before COP27, which are:
1st: Adopting a holistic approach that improve dealing with climate change challenges.
2nd: Building on goals and objectives of Paris agreement, and in the light of the results of the previous climate change conferences, Sharm El Sheikh conference top priority will be focusing on the implementation of the pledges made by different governments, and the commitments of private sector, international organizations and financing entities towards climate action.
3rd: Climate action needs massive financing sums that exceed the annual 100 billion dollars pledged by Copenhagen conference in 2009, this makes private sector engagement in financing climate projects in the shape of investments a must, it also requires new agreement on the rules and priorities of financing post 2025 climate projects.
4th: Improvement of regional cooperation in implementing climate projects that have geographic aspects transcend one country boundaries.
5th: Localizing of climate projects that are compatible with sustainable development programs in villages, cities, far regions and islands in a framework that aims to achieve the goals of the holistic approach.
The climate champion stressed that youth, CSOs and HLCs will play a big and vital role in making COP27 successful, saying that the conference agenda contains a day of events for youth and CSOs particularly.
Mohieldin referred to the importance of all stakeholders engagement in climate action, including, businesses, youth and NGOs, in order to achieve climate goals in the near future.
