LUWERO-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: Fresh information has emerged that several family members of the former minister, Abdul Nadduli who were feared kidnapped this morning were picked up by police and the army for alleged possession of the firearm that was recently stolen from Busiika police station.

Among those arrested are Sulaiman Nadduli, the imam of Masjid Fatuma Shamisi Kalege, Yusuf Jakana, Issa Gabindadde, Lubulwa Muhamadi, Kassim Kyanjo, Isma Ssenkubuge, Jamadah Mugga, Rehema Nakungu, and Mwamin Nalubulwa.

The suspects were picked up from Kalege village in Semuto sub-county Nakaseke district Tuesday morning. According to the family, the joint security forces raided their homes at around 2:00 am and picked up the suspects.

Aisha Nantege, a resident of Kalege village, says that armed security personnel forced her to open the door and interrogated her about her sons. They later dug up the house purportedly to look for the stolen gun.

Safinah Nakate, another resident says that the same group broke into their house and arrested her husband, Yusuf Jakana. According to Nakate, she pleaded with security to release him in vain as they insisted that she tells them where he hid the gun.

Alex Ssempijja, another resident says that the security personnel beat him and others when they inquired about the arrest of their neighbour, Sulaiman Nadduli. Patrick Lule, the Savannah Regional police spokesperson, said that he was not aware of the arrests. Alhajji Abdul Nadduli told URN that he was informed by Brig Gen Abdul Rugumayo, the deputy chief of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) that the suspects were picked on allegations by a relative that they were in possession of a gun.

He, however, says that Rugumayo admitted that during their search, they found no gun. The Defense Ministry spokesperson, Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye, said that he wasn’t aware of the operation but was quick to add that the suspects will be released once investigations prove their innocence. The raid comes a week after unknown assailants raided Busiika police station, killed two police officers, and injured two others before they made off with two firearms.

About two weeks ago Nadduli lost his son Jakana Sulaiman Nadduli,37, following his arrest over allegations of promoting sectarianism. He was laid to rest at his ancestral home at Kaddunda village in Kapeeka sub-county, Nakaseke district.

Nadduli blamed the death of his son on his arrest shortly after undergoing an operation at Nsambya hospital following a nasty accident. He told journalists that his son complained of torture while in detention despite the fact that he was recuperating from the surgery.
