ENTEBE-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: The widow to the late Dr. Kwanga Ssemogerere has rejected a three gun salute offer from President Museveni moments before guns were due for firing at the burial.
Mrs. Germina Namatovu Ssemogerere said her husband in life detested gun related events and rejected government offers during his funeral.
“My husband detested anything related to guns, no gun salute for him,” Mrs Ssemogerere said.
Pictures seen soon after her announcement appeared to show two men one donning a military and the other a police uniform squatting and probably convincing her.
Mrs Ssemogerere later accepted and the 15 gun salutes were launched.
Newsday in reported the funeral committee for Dr. Ssemogerere had rejected the official funeral which would have seen the body flown by helicopter from Kololo where government had planned public viewing to Nkumba where the deceased is being buried.
Information Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi on behalf of government had said Dr Ssemogerere will be accorded an official funeral and burial with a three-gun salute on Monday.
The government also pledged to meet all burial and funeral expenses. It is not clear whether this ofer has also been rejected.
Dr Ssemogerere died on Friday and has been described as a patriot and peacemaker.
