SEMBABULE-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: An angry mob has charged at the officer in charge (OC) of Kyera police post, in Sembabule district who they accused of battering a woman in the area.

Gaston Bogere, the OC narrowly survived lynching on Thursday evening after he pounced on Juliet Tumwesigye, a resident of Kyera cell A whom he badly beat, rising anger among the residents.

The policeman who was allegedly drunk went to Tumwesigye’s home before he hit her with a stick in the guise of enforcing COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

However, the neighbours who heard Tumwesigye screaming and pleading responded by apprehending Bogere who was only saved by the Kyera LC. III chairperson Frank Basaaza. The L.C III chairperson restrained the charged mob from lynching the policeman.

According to Basaaza, the policeman is a habitual drunkard who doesn’t deserve to continue policing the community. He indicates that residents have repeatedly complained about Bogere’s misconduct, but his bosses have been reluctant on taking the necessary actions to bring him to order, something that has angered the residents.

Although Basaaza saved the policeman from the angry mob, he demands that the officer is punished for his misconduct as well as being charged for badly beating up an innocent citizen.

Stephen Turyatunga, one of the eyewitnesses indicates that Bogere was drunk and pounced on a resident while she was collecting groundnuts from the courtyard after sunset.

He says that the victim suffered bruises on her body as well serious internal injuries, leading her to passing out blood.

Meanwhile, Bogere is being detained at Sembabule Central Police Station to help as investigations in the incident continue. Andrew Akanyijuka, the Sembabule District Police Commander said he will follow up the matter to ensure that the victim currently admitted in hospital gets justice.
