KAMPALA-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: President Museveni has reportedly taken over direct supervision of the investigations in the death threats against Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja after she reported to him.
Museveni has reportedly directed the Chieftaincy of Military intelligence (CMI) to take the lead of the investigations and directly report to him.
Nabbanja on Friday revealed she would brief President Yoweri Museveni about threats directed at her during a press briefing at parliament after attending the Bunyoro Parliamentary Caucus.
She said some unidentified people were threatening her through relatives. She said that a lady recently approached her brother, a town clerk in Kakumiro in regard to the manner she is handling government business.
The Premier on Tuesday rejected relief items for flood victims in Kasese district due to poor quality. The items included 1,000 mosquito nets, 100 floor mops presented as blankets, 100 mats, 20,000 kilograms of beans, 40,000 kilograms of maize flour, 2,000 kilograms of sugar, 1,350 jerricans, 2,000 tarpaulin, 1,000 basins and 100 cartons of laundry soap.
Shortly after arriving in the district by a military chopper, Nabbanja stopped the distribution of mosquito nets and blankets, saying that Kasese district was not a dumping ground for sub-standard items. She demanded that these be immediately sent back to Kampala and the supplier provides better items.
She however accepted the other food items after criticizing her team. Nabbanja was in Kasese district to assess the situation and devise a response plan together with the Minister of State for Relief, Disaster Preparedness and Refugees and the Minister of State for ICT and National Guidance, Godfrey Kabyanga.
Now asked by journalists what her office has done in regard to the substandard items, Nabbanja said that on return from Kasese, she wrote to the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister –OPM seeking a report on the contractors and the officer responsible for the items purchased and the budget.
“They gave me a report yesterday and I was not satisfied and I asked for further investigations into the matter,” Nabbanja said without divulging further information. “I have involved the Inspectorate of Government- IG, Police and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit. As a leader if you are not satisfied, you have avenues you can use to investigate.”
She says that her office gave the three investigative arms of government three days to report back.
Nabbanja was on 15th June approved by Parliament as new Prime Minister following her appointment by President Yoweri Museveni. After her approval, she committed to ensure timely service delivery and implementation of government programs
The new Premier insists that all she seeks is quality service for the people, transparency and services commensurate to funds provided by government.
She has just directed further investigations into the procurement of relief items for flood victims in Kasese district that she recently rejected.
