Police officer in rescue mission of traditional healers killed

KAMULI-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: A police officer has been killed while her colleagues is in critical condition after an irate mob attacked Namasagali police station.

The officers had just rescued and detained two traditional healers, who allegedly bewitched two village members to death in July 2021.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga says preliminary information indicates, that on Sunday at around 6pm, police at Namasagali rescued two traditional healers, identified as Namuyindo Yosam and Ojja Joseph, of Kadungu B village, Kisakye Parish, Namasagali sub-county in Kamuli district.

“The two victims were rushed to Namasagali police station for safe custody. While at the station, a violent mob armed with pangas, sticks and stones attacked the officers with a view of lynching the two suspects”, Enanga says.

He added that police attempted to fire warning shots but the charged mob was only advancing and two officers were fatally injured with Detective constable Kasolo Francis dying on the way to hospital.

Sgt Nakabuye Florence and a crime preventer Bagadira David, are in critical condition at Kamuli Mission Hospital.

One of the rescued traditional healers, Namuyindo Yosam, was also fatally wounded by stray bullets, during the scuffle for the police gun.

At least 11 suspects are including Muzaale Isima, Walujo Karim, Mpule Robert, Wanjala Yoweri, Oliga Yoweri, Magala Silvester, Wabwire Zabwe, Mvabagwa Yonah Dooba, Ekijati John, Mugatu Ewaku and Abiora Alex are in custody. The prime suspect Buyinza Buyala and several accomplices who have fled from the village.
