KAMPALA/NEWSDAY-UGANDA: The former secretary General of the Uganda Red Cross Society, Richard Michael Nataka was Monday slapped with a 7 year prison sentence after being found guilty of embezzling 1.2 billion shillings that was meant for the construction of the African Youth Leadership and Training centre in Namakwa Mukono District in 2013.
The anti Corruption Court grade one Magistrate Moses Nabende declared him guilty after prosecution had adduced sufficient evidence to prove that he embezzled, abused his office, engaged in conspiracy to defraud and caused a financial loss to his employers.
Along his jail term, Nataka was disqualified from holding public office for three years.
Prosecution said, Nataka made and approved payments to Buki Enterprise Ltd for the said construction while knowing that such payments would cause actual loss to the Uganda Red Cross Society.
He was found guilty of signing duplicate contracts to favor the said company, Jensani construction and Saki Technical Service for the said job among other fraudulent contracts in which Uganda Red Cross society lost millions of shillings.
