LUWERO-UGANDA/NEWSDAY: Political activist Jakana Nadduli is dead. He was the son of veteran bush war hero and ex-minister without portfolio Hajji Abdu Nadduli died from a health facility in Wobulenzi in Luwero district on Monday morning.
“We’ve woken up to the terrible news of the untimely passing of our brother Jakaana Nadduli. The family says he was found dead at his home, a few days after he was released from prison. I spoke to him Saturday and he sounded fine. Terrible news. Inna lillahi wa inallah-e-raji’oon,” National Unity Platform secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya tweeted at 5.14 am today.
His brother, Hussein Kyeyune Kyanjo told URN that Jakana breathed his last at around 1:30 am on the way to Orient clinic in Wobulenzi town where he was being rushed for treatment.
According to Kyanjo, Jakana has been battling complications resulting from a nasty accident he got early this year. He says that the deceased’s body has been transferred to their father’s home at Lusenke zone in Wobulenzi town council ahead for the burial arrangements. Ali Nadduli also a brother to the deceased described the news as tragic, saying their father is devastated.
Hajji Nadduli has since issued a statement informing President Yoweri Museveni, ministers, National Resistance party leaders, and Buganda kingdom officials among others about the death of his son. In his statement, Nadduli indicates that Jakana will be buried at 4 pm later today at their ancestral home in Kadunda village in Kapeeka sub-county in Nakaseke district. Jakana has been battling charges of promoting sectarianism against Banyankole and Banyarwanda contrary to section 41(1) of the penal code act.
Nadduli was recently released from prison on charges of promoting sectarianism when he allegedly called for a genocide against Rwandan and Banyankore colonisers in Uganda. Upon release, he accused the government of torturing him whilst in detention including serving him food from inside a toilet.
He also said accused his long-time friend Peter Kankaka of spying on him and stealing over Shs 75 million that various people had collected to facilitate the court process and for treatment of accident wounds he sustained recently.
According to his family, Jakana was mysteriously arrested by armed personnel driving in the infamous drone vehicle from Makindye in Kampala last month and presented to court four days later. After pleading guilty to the charges earlier on September 9, on September 21, he changed his plea and was granted a Shs 5 million cash bail by Luwero grade one magistrate, John Paul Obuya.
According to state prosecution, “Mr Suleiman Jakana Nadduli, a resident of Wobulenzi Town in Luweero District on April 5, 2022, recorded and uploaded a YouTube video promoting sectarianism against the Banyarwanda and Banyankole tribal groups in Uganda.”
He was scheduled to return to Luwero Magistrate’s court on November 16. Jakana contested for the Nakaseke Central parliamentary seat in the last general election where he emerged third and lost to NUP candidate Allan Mayanja Ssebunya. Jakana had since become a strong critic of the ruling NRM government on social media accusing it of sidelining his father in government despite his huge contribution during the bush days.
